Proposition 33 News

Press Release – The American Legion—Representing Over 135,000 California Veterans Endorses Proposition 33

Sacramento, CA – The American Legion, with more than 135,000 members representing the men and women of our armed forces and their families, today announced their endorsement of Proposition 33, the 2012 Automobile Insurance Discount Act.

“The job of the American Legion is to support the interests of veterans. We believe Proposition 33 is a marked improvement over the present system,” said American Legion State Commander Ken Kramlich. “Proposition 33 is a good idea for California consumers. Many people have suffered hardships in this tough economy and our veterans are not exempt.”

There have been significant improvements to make the initiative more inclusive for those currently insured and to reach out to those who have lost their discount or have not had insurance in the past.

  • Active military personnel will receive the discount, meaning veterans transitioning to civilian life in search of jobs will qualify
  • Dependents living with their parents will receive the same discount available to their parents

Unlike the present system, more people are protected; the furloughed, unemployed, seniors and those who are ill have significantly better protections under Proposition 33 than now exist. Proposition 33 will allow consumers to shop their discount to an insurance carrier of their choice. This will increase competition, lower rates and insure more Californians. Consumers will get a discount for each year they were insured in the previous five years. For example, if you have had four years of insurance in the last five years, you will get 80% of the discount. Unlike the present system, more people are protected.

Proposition 33 has received bipartisan support since being added to the November ballot. Supporters of Proposition 33 include: Peace Officers Research Association of California, CDF Firefighters, the Greenlining Institute, the American GI Forum and Democratic and Republican leaders including former Assembly Minority Leader Jim Brulte and former Democratic Assembly Speaker Willie Brown.
